Olympic Wrestling: No More

This news is starting to make the rounds and to be totally honest I am pretty disgusted by it.

IOC leaders dropped wrestling from the Olympic program on Tuesday, a surprise decision that removes one of the oldest Olympic sports from the 2020 Games.

The IOC executive board decided to retain modern pentathlon — the event considered most at risk — and remove wrestling instead from its list of 25 "core sports."

The IOC board acted after reviewing the 26 sports on the current Olympic program. Eliminating one sport allows the International Olympic Committee to add a new sport to the program later this year.
Wrestling, which combines freestyle and Greco-Roman events, goes back to the inaugural modern Olympics in Athens in 1896."

This is legitimately a load of crap. And its fairly obvious where the reasoning lies...money. Although I am not sure how Modern Pentathlon made the cut. If there was a sport that screamed 'rich white folk' its the MP. Wrestling has always been a part of the games since ancient times yet it gets cut just like that. Rugby making it in I am happy about....Golf? Not so much. Not to mention some of the other goofy sports that quite frankly have no business being considered. Remember baseball and softball being in? That worked out real well. But now Wrestling has to contend with those two sports again in order to be considered for 2020. Doesnt matter since in the end they'll show hours of coverage for the 100m dash and diving yet maybe 5 minutes of field events in Track and Field.

Track and Field Throwing Events: Specific Exercises

This is the copy from the cheat sheet I wrote for the throwers today for their event work while in the weight room.

Event Specific Exercises
Cheat Sheet
Glide Drills
-Glide with sled – hook sled belt and pull sled while gliding
4-5 sets. 3-5 reps
-Glide with band resistance – Hold band and glide. Reset between each rep.
4-5 sets, 5-8 reps
-Band resisted kick- Tie an anchored band around the ankle of the leg you reach back with during your glide. Use the band to resist the extension.
4-5 sets, 8-12 reps each
Rotational (both shot and discus)
-Weighted half turn- Hold a weight (any) over center hip and rotate 180deg on pivot foot. Keep shoulders back and weight over pivot foot.
5 sets, 12-15 reps
-360 drill- Holding a kettlebell or dumbbell as a implement rotate 360 degrees.
5 sets, 10 reps both sides
Shot Put specific
-Bondarchuk Press- A push press only bar is pressed at a 45deg angle and quickly brought back to the chest.
4-5 sets, 5-8 reps
-1-2 punch drill- Holding a dumbbell line up in power position. Go to clear then strike the dumbbell without releasing.
5 sets, 5-8 reps both sides
-RC Punch- Setup on the Roman Chair (we do glute ham raise on these) facing upwards with a dumbbell or kettlebell in hand. Keep body parallel to the ground and strike forward as if you were throwing.
3-5 sets, 8-12 reps both sides
-Jammers- similar to 1-2 punch only use a landmine or Jammer Press machine. Strike up and forward one arm at a time.
4 sets, 8-12 reps

Discus Specific
-RC Pull- same as RC Punch only pulling a lighter implement
3-5 sets, 8-12 reps each
-1-2 band pull- Similar to punch, however, use a stretch band for resistance. Keep the right arm long.
5 sets, 5-8 reps each side
Weight throw Specific
-KB Windups- Use a kettlebell to practice wind up rotations
3-5 sets, 10-20 reps
-KB Turns- Multiple turns in a row using a kettlebell
3 sets, x10 of how many turns you use in competition (i.e. 2-turn = 20 turns/set)
-Sedych Drill- Using a kettlebell do a turn in this order and continuous(wind-1 turn-wind- 2 turn- wind- 3 turn- repeat)
3 sets, 3-5 reps ( a rep being what is listed above)
******MORE DRILLS MAY BE ADDED IN THE FUTURE. IF YOU NEED MORE IDEAS JUST ASK*******
P.S. These are meant to build STRENGTH!! So don’t go light and easy. Drills are expected to be done well but with an intense amount of resistance. Treat them as you would a heavy bench, clean, or squat, etc.

Oberlin round 2

This week went a little better than last week but unfortunately not by much. Moose is slowly coming along with the weight hitting another nice PR. Laffin ended up winning the weight throw and I think he missed a big one on the last round or so. Jake just picked up the rotation this week, competed with it, and nearly PR'd in shot. He still managed some nice throws in the weight as well.

My general view on our competitions is looking like this. Focus needs to improve. As with preparation. We went into another meet with minimal throws during training due to weather and my own illness so it was tough to expect a great day. However, our attitudes going into the meet are not that of a competitive spirit but very lax and not intense. If big throws are going to happen during big meets we need to train ourselves to be focused and competitive in the little meets first.

Don't forget to clean your shaker bottle

I thought I kept my shaker in decent condition but apparently there is a pretty real threat behind using a less than clean shaker bottle for your supplement intake- E. coli. Well that is more than likely what hit me last week. Wednesday I came down with a pretty bad fever, stomach cramping, and nausea. Thought it was the flu. Nope. Symptoms almost all went away the next day yet two problems remained; my back started to hurt and (this is a little gross) my urine came out in a almost brown cloud. After consulting with my soon to be nurse lady friend she could only think its an infection in either my bladder or kidneys. Super.

So whats the treatment? Well most sane individuals would see a doctor post-haste and get some antibiotics. Me? Aint nobody got time for dat. Not the smartest idea but even as of typing this my symptoms are about gone and bodily fluids returning to normal. So instead it was a massive amount of fluids to restore hydration, flush out the bad bugs in me, and some fiber to help clear out everything else. As far as I can tell Im about good as new(ish) and just a little tired more than usual.

Well it's been a stressful week.
